Situated a few miles north of San Diego’s exciting downtown, Hillcrest is known as San Diego’s LGBTQ+ hub, along with its lively atmosphere. Boasting of inviting and friendly social landscape, a rainbow Pride flag stands tall at the corner of Normal Street at the city’s east end. It signifies the yearly mile-long parade to celebrate LGBTQ+ pride, and just a little further down you can find the San Diego LGBTQ+ Community Center along Harvey Milk Street, the pride of Hillcrest. Because of this, people of all identities come here to bask in the acceptance and promotion of LGBT+, and some claim that this is the only place that does not ostracize people regardless of their lifestyle choices.
Apart from being a hub that accepts all identities, a couple of blocks down west from the Pride flag is a diverse array of restaurants, wine bars and nightclubs for residents who like to party. There are also a plethora of retail shops for people who could use a little retail therapy, as the Uptown District shopping plaza is lined with endless rows of boutique stores, clothing stores, and decor shops. There is also an openly gay brewery; the only one in the country, Hillcrest Brewing Company if you’d like to check it out. On Sundays, these rows of streets transform into one of the biggest and most exciting farmers’ markets from 9 am to 2 pm, selling numerous items ranging from local produce, and little arts and crafts. It also hosts countless food and beverages to satisfy your hunger while shopping.
If that isn’t enough for you, you can take a walk down to the neighborhood’s “village” area that is characterized by the striking neon “Hillcrest” sign. There, you can expect numerous newly-opened and famous restaurants, as well as cafes that sell dessert and coffee. Vintage clothing is also available there, along with local bookstores and the Landmark Cinemas for you to catch your favorite films.
If you are looking to explore what the rest of San Diego has to offer, Balboa Park is just a stone’s throw away from Hillcrest. It is one of San Diego’s most famous landmarks and is one of the largest in North America. It serves as an idyllic place for recreational activities like cycling and running, friendly gatherings and has a rich art and cultural landscape. It houses a total of 16 museums featuring fascinating exhibitions for locals to immerse themselves in the rich culture of San Diego, and several performing arts venues where you can catch occasional live performances. The park also holds buildings of Spanish-Renaissance architecture; a definite feast for your eyes. With approximately 1,200 acres of enchanting gardens and vast green patches, you can even head to the San Diego Zoo while you’re there!
Underneath all the glitz and glamour, some of you may have heard certain rumors about Hillcrest. One of the biggest misconceptions is that Hillcrest does not have ample parking lots for self-owned motorized vehicles. The Department of Motor Vehicles parking lot actually offers free parking space from 6.30 pm to 3 am at 3960 Normal Street, though it is closed on Tuesdays and Thursdays nights.
If you are a fan of architecture, one of the more iconic buildings in Hillcrest is the majestic Eitol Towers that was recently completed in 2018. It is a multiutility building of residential community designed and built for urban residents who crave for something novel and exciting. This building is unlike other normal buildings, as it consists of 13 vividly colored modern towers surrounding a giant courtyard. It also features man-made water decor and a small cascade, a relaxing lounge, and a hyper-stylized restaurant, InsideOut. As most people call it “The Red Building”, Eitol Towers is ostensibly the most eye-catching new development project that attracts the younger generation.
With so much to do and see at Hillcrest, it will be an absolute dream to relocate here.
